Let me give you a typical example.
If we suffer from a bad back, which has been niggling for many years,we often choose to ignore it, learning to put up with the pain. Living with pain is difficult and may create a change in our mood, making it harder to be cheerfull and optimistic about life in general. The body often tries to protect itself from pain by holding itself still, thus avoiding the pain-producing range of movement. Consequently many muscles become tighter, movement becomes harder, and so we become less able to do things. Our feeling of fustration increases. Doing what we enjoy becomes harder, and with our enjoyment lessenned, we may begin to feel very low. Being less resillient, we are more vulnerable than usual, often feeling stressed by events. Physically, stress increases muscle tension, and is shown to reduce the effectiveness of our immune system. Our back hurts more than usual, we get a cold, sneeze, injure the already tight back muscles, and, of course, increase the pain. Sleep may become difficult, increasing fatigue, which increases our feelings of stress....and on and on.One aspect of the cycle feeds into and creates more problems thus initiating a downward spiral.
Recognising that we are spiralling away from being at our best, is the first step in breaking the chain. The second step is to know what to do in order to help yourself actually begin to untie enough of the connections, so that the spiral shifts into the positive direction. We get better and begin to feel good.
This is my job. The downward spiral can be stopped. Some spirals need a lot of help to reverse. Some change very easily. Wise individuals never get into a downwards spiral, dealing with problems as they arise, rather than live with them. In the above example, getting treatment for the original back pain, understanding how to avoid re-injury and if necessary, making sensible changes that allow you to continue to do the things you want to do, would have prevented the vicious cycle from being activated.I have a wide range of skills that can help you recover and heal not just on the physical level, but on the mental/emotional levels as well if necessary, lifting your spirit, helping you to feel and be well.
